History of RHAP

Founded in 2009, Red Hook Art Project (RHAP) is a non-profit organization that provides free visual art, music, academic and stress management instruction to children and youth who live in and around Red Hook, Brooklyn. Operating out of a corner storefront in the heart of Red Hook, RHAP organizes our community of 30 volunteers—artists, musicians, writers, doctors and other practitioners—to teach and mentor our students on a weekly basis. Our classes are intentionally small, and we strive to give each student individual attention during each class. Our pedagogical approach is rooted in responding to our students interests and needs with special attention to activities that build self-confidence and problem solving skills. We see our program as a fun, enriching, and supportive supplement to the academic curriculum of school. RHAP would like to thank and acknowledge Deirdre Swords for founding this organization and her ten years of committed work.

What We Do

RHAP organizes working professionals and educators to volunteer a few hours a week on an ongoing basis giving free homework help, visual art lessons and music lessons to children and youth between the ages of 7 and 18. Our classes follow our pedagogy, classroom guidelines and curriculum. We build a unique community of adults and children that reaches beyond the confines of school-based education. We provide opportunities to develop community, leadership, teamwork, discipline, social justice and economic life learning skills.

Who We Serve

90% of the students we serve come from low income families and are eligible for the reduced-price free breakfast and lunch. 95% are living in low income housing developments in and near to the Red Hook community. We serve 75% Hispanics, 20% African Americans and 5% white students.

Where We Are Going

Our goal is to continue to improve RHAP’s strength as a community center serving 95 children and youth and furthering the wholeness of a diverse community through our specialized pedagogy and curriculum with the long-term goal of creating a template that can be followed by similar endeavors in multiple communities.

CoVID Response

During the COVID19 pandemic, RHAP never stopped holding classes and expanded its efforts to meet the sudden compounded needs of the Red Hook children, families, and community at large. RHAP began distributing hot meals, PPE, diapers, and other necessities. After months of responding to the changing needs of the community, it became clear that RHAP is much more than an arts organization. Through years of trust-building and partnership, RHAP has become integral to the fiber of the neighborhood. The pandemic provided a breakthrough and sealed a bond between RHAP and the Red Hook community - a connection which cannot be broken. All of this, despite having had to give up our studio space. We rose to the occasion and rapidly transitioned from in-person to virtual classes and community support. In fact, RHAP’s executive director Ms. Tiffiney Davis was recognized by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams as a COVID-19 hero, and RHAP as an organization has received consistent media attention for its work during the pandemic.

During a year of untold hardship, we stepped up our efforts and provided much needed assistance on top of our regular arts programming. Over the past year, RHAP held 122 virtual art classes, hosted over 10 community events, helped our graduating students prepare portfolios for entrance into NYC’s prestigious art schools, and served over $250,000 worth of donated meals to the community. We hired a social worker who met with a group of our students on a weekly basis, and made monthly health and wellness calls to all of our students’ families through the pandemic to provide professional mental health support. When we attended one of our weekly online art classes we heard so much laughter and watched our students smile as they shared their drawings. Experiences like this help build self-confidence, a sense of belonging, and the resilience necessary to endure life’s challenges.

Tiffiney Davis (she/her/hers)

Tiffiney Davis, Brooklyn raised, has dedicated her life to breaking barriers in the name of the arts. Using different disciplines to uplift a child’s voice, increasing graduation rates, providing a creative space for children achievement, community awareness and building connections and collaborations with local Red Hook/Brooklyn residents. Through the years, Tiffiney has shown extreme dedication and selflessness, especially throughout the sudden pandemic that left a lot of families and businesses without. While many were under quarantine, Tiffiney was still able to transition to a virtual setting and host over 100 virtual art classes to ensure that children were still receiving support. While many families were low on food, Tiffiney hit the pavement and made connections with local restaurants and grocery stores to help get food into homes in need; as well as establishing two community refrigerators. Tiffiney’s dedication and resilience assisted in her promotion from Managing Director to Executive Director at Red Hook Art Project.

Hi! My name is Angelly Suero-Perez, I am 19 years old. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, specifically Red Hook. It has always been my home. I am an artist who loves to always find new art techniques and different types of art skills. My goal in art is to learn and to teach others. A fun fact about myself is that I was literally born on the Smith 9th Street bridge. I first found my interest in art when I was in elementary school. I had an art teacher who saw something in me that I didn't and decided to put my art into a museum in Manhattan. After that experience I couldn't get my mind off art. I never stopped drawing and doodling and it wasn't until I found Tiffiney and the RHAP program. Tiffiney really made my artistic side shine. After joining the program eight years ago it helped me be my true self and ever since then I haven't stopped learning, seeing and experiencing new things. I am grateful that I am able to get many opportunities to prosper and to help the future with the next generations to teach and even learn from.

Tashawn Davis, Co-facilitator

Tashawn: I grew up in the streets of Red Hook, Brooklyn. Studied art with the Red Hook Art Project which helped me get into an art high school. I graduated from Edward R. Murrow High School, which specializes in the arts. I left FIT after a year and moved to LA when I was 18. I spent two years making my way to becoming an artist and building my brand. During that time I developed a love for vintage fashion and art. The ‘70s was a time where both style and politics seemed to be welded together, and self expression was omnipresent, globally. The 70’s fashion and culture specifically in New York became a lifestyle for Me. Fully embodying history by wearing all vintage clothing and accessories and even decorating my apartment to look like you stepped into the 1970s. In 2019 I moved back to New York and I’ve worked with brands/companies like FILA, pro-keds, AT&T, Vogue, Amazon, KITH and so on.
